Niles Library Display

Brenda and William spent an afternoon working with Niles, Michigan librarians setting up an exhibit of Charlie Walker memorabilia and photographs.

The librarians were thrilled to have original 1950s and ‘60s documents and photos. Copies of letters from Martin Luther King Jr. highlighted Charlie’s deep involvement in the Civil Rights Movement as an expert in nonviolence.

Photos of Walker with Bayard Rustin, Glenn Smiley, Jackie Robinson, and other Civil Rights notables helped tell the story. Also included in the exhibit were documents from the Mississippi Freedom Summer program, the Montgomery Story comic book illustrated by Al Capp, and quotes from Charlie, Dr. King and others. Smaller displays at Howard, Edwardsburg and Cass District libraries were also set up to present Walker’s work in Civil Rights.
